Spiritual Direction in the Diocese of York - The Life of the Spirit

The Diocese offers many opportunities to explore matters of faith and spirituality. Those involved in ministry, lay or ordained, may seek to find a spiritual director or soul friend. If you are interested in exploring this, the following people coordinate spiritual direction in their respective Archdeaconry: Cleveland - the Revd Andrew de Smet (01439 770760) & the Rev’d Adam Reed (01287 622007); East Riding – The Revd David Jago (01482 443566); York - the Revd Dr Susan Collier (01904 706064). There's a leaflet to download below with information on finding a spritual director.

There are retreats and conferences held throughout the year at Wydale Hall, the Diocesan retreat house; at St Oswald’s Pastoral Centre (which is run by the Sisters of the Order of the Holy Paraclete), at Sneaton Castle and Holy Rood House. Regular quiet days and an annual retreat are recommended for anyone in ministry, and are beneficial for spouses.

The ecumenical magazine ‘Retreats’ lists nation-wide retreat houses, as does the Retreat Association website. You can apply to your Archdeacon for financial assistance for retreats or conferences.

Finally, the Quiet Garden Trust has several gardens in this area, some of which can be used for quiet days. Your Archdeacon or Andrew De Smet will give you details if you are interested, or go direct to the Quiet Garden Trust web site.
