South African Link

The Diocese of York is twinned with three Dioceses in South Africa - Cape Town, False Bay and Saldanha Bay. The Diocese of Saldanha Bay is linked with the Archdeaconry of York, False Bay with the Archdeaconry of Cleveland, and the Diocese of Cape Town with the Archdeaconry of East Riding. The link aims to be one of encouragement and a mutual concern to help each other in our mission to make Christ's love known.
Youth Work Leaders' trip to Cape Town
12 youth work leaders from the Diocese of York, including 2 youth leaders from the Methodist church are going to Cape Town this Autumn. The purpose of the trip is chiefly to experience something of the rich variety of youth work in Cape Town; to receive training through Fikelela's 'Agents of Change" programme, and to give something back through practical work activities at homes for children. You can get more details from this LINK .
Archbishop Holgate School Link with Cape Town
Archbishop Holgate’s School has fostered a great link with the Diocese of Cape Town, and have made several trips there. They have just booked flights to go in March 2012, and 8 pupils are looking forward to this life changing experience.
Back in January the school was fortunate to be able to welcome a new pupil who joined them for a month from South Africa. As a fruit of their ongoing relationship with the Diocese of Cape Town the school played host to Ciara Mash who participated in an exchange with Hayley Neal from year 11. Ciara arrived into the UK on Boxing Day and came up to chilly York on 30th December to stay with the Neal family until the end of January. At that time Cape Town was sweltering in temperatures in the high 30’s, having hit 40 degrees centigrade at one point! READ THE FULL STORY... follow this LINK
Bishop of Whitby trip to the Diocese of False Bay (May 2011)
South Africa is a beautiful country. Mountains and vineyards as far as the eye can see in the area we visited. We were picked up from the airport by Mike, who is the Diocesan Link Co-ordinator, and taken to the first part of our visit in Montague Springs. Here we met with Father Clarence who along with Mike and his wife Mitch took responsibility for getting us to where we needed to be on time (although English time and South Africa time are somewhat different!). Read more about this trip by the Bishop and other members of the Cleveland Archdeaconry to the Diocese of False Bay, on the Bishop of Whitby's own Blog: HERE
