David Butterfield comes from Shipley in the West Riding. He has been a churchgoer since he joined the church choir at the age of eight. He studied music at London University and it was during that time that he became a committed Christian. After leaving university he worked in his father’s small business making clock springs and during that year a sense of call to the ordained ministry grew.
After training at St John’s College, Nottingham he married Irene in 1977 and they moved to Southport where be became Curate of Christ Church. In 1981 they moved to the West Midlands where David was appointed Team Vicar of St Thomas’ Church, Aldridge. In 1991 he became Vicar of three parishes in Shropshire and during his time there a new Church and Community Centre was opened in Muxton, Telford. He was Rural Dean for 9 years, a member of General Synod for 15 years and also Chair of the House of Clergy in the Lichfield Diocese. He was appointed Archdeacon of the East Riding in February 2007.
The areas of ministry that energise him are Evangelism, Christian Giving and Music in Worship. He and Irene have two sons. In his spare time he enjoys playing the piano, church organ and synthesizer, walking with his wife, swimming, cycling and making marmalade.
