Role Descriptions

For every post that is held under Common Tenure, there is a primary document called the Statement of Particulars which is generic to each kind of post, plus a Role Description which refers specifically to the circumstances of each particular appointment. Although Common Tenure makes it mandatory for dioceses to provide statements of particulars, it is for individual dioceses to decide whether role descriptions should be advisory or mandatory. In York the Archbishop is requiring all clergy subject to Common Tenure to complete a role description. Those who have chosen to remain on freehold are under no legal obligation to draw up a role description but are encouraged to do so because it will support the Ministerial Development Review (MDR) process

You may be aware that not all dioceses have approached this in the same way. In York we have tried to do this gradually in order to ensure that the process is supportive and does not distract from ministry. For this reason it was decided to introduce the statement of particulars and supporting Clergy Handbook first and then to address role descriptions in workshops over the autumn of 2011.
