Bungoma Calling

There is a link between the Diocese of York and Bungoma in W Kenya.
The link is primarily a training link to encourage the church in Bungoma through the provision of teaching and training opportunities, resources, books and cross cultural experiences. Each year an Encounter Team drawn from our Diocese are invited to visit and provide a 2 week programme of seminars that meet needs in Bungoma and use the gifts and abilities of lay and clergy from York.
The link has been pioneered by Revd Phil White since a sabbatical there in 2006 which he spent with the then Bishop of Bungoma Rt Revd Eliud Wabukala, since elevated to Archbishop of Kenya. The training team link has since been made a part of his job description to encourage a 2 way friendship and partnership.
The link has also been formally adopted by the Scarborough Deanery. Other churches, benefices, deaneries would also be welcome to explore a link. Church Mission Society (CMS) has been instrumental in helping to establish the link. Phil’s sabbatical was set up through CMS and subsequent Encounter Team visits have been administered with their help.
Since July 2010, however, ‘Bungoma Calling’ has been registered (no. 1137121) as a charity and will be administer future visits (www.bungomacalling.co.uk) . Trustees of Bungoma Calling are largely Encounter Team members whose lives and perspectives have been changed through their experiences with the wonderful people of Bungoma.
Encounter Bungoma 2010 linked up with the Langham Partnership (www.langhampartnership.org.uk) in Kenya with a view to the possibility of bringing a Langham 3year rolling programme of seminars in preaching and bible exposition to clergy in Bungoma District.
